The year was 2010 and I was in third year college.
In between classes you’d sometimes find me spending hours in a nearby “internet cafe” a few steps away from campus.
And while 99% of the people around me are either 1) doing a school assignment, 2) playing PC games, or 3) exploring the ancient version of Facebook…
I’d be doing something, which at that time, is quite unusual and weird for my age:
I was freelance writing on the internet.
At that time, I don’t even know if anyone in the school is doing the same thing.
It felt like I stumbled upon a discovery that would change my life dramatically.
Definitely felt that I discovered something HUGE and that I’m a pioneer of it.
And it’s such a privilege that I found it.
This little bad boy, called freelancing, is responsible for paying a huge portion of my college tuition.
Today, 15 years later, I can still feel the impact of freelancing in my life.
It’s led to wonderful opportunities, exciting bounties, deep learning moments, and a “pindot pindot” lifestyle that fits my personality.
I guess I’m here to simply tell you that you can do it too.
My goodness, if a 3rd year “non- techie” college student in a cheap internet cafe can do it, why can’t you?
Here’s one key thing that allowed me to get started with freelancing and turn it into a lifestyle:
Freelancing is a sales process.
Nothing more, nothing less!
The product is your skills.
The market are people who need and want the fruit of your skills.
The main ads/offer are your profile and bid proposal.
And the freelance platforms (such as Upwork or Fiverr) are simply channels of distribution. You have to know the platform well.
To make money in freelancing, you just have to understand (and improve on) all the aspects of this sales process.
And when you do, it literally allows you to print money. 🙂
