Anyone can send a bid or proposal for a project on Upwork, but not everyone can get selected.
In fact, you’ll find that for the best freelance job listings, there would usually be around 70-100+ applicants!
Which makes it more and more tough to get selected.
In my 12+ years as a freelancer (and millions made in project income), I’ve found that there are only two ways to get selected for a project that pays well:
[1] The first way is the ‘long method’ of showcasing your experience, skills and abilities to the client. This requires showing some previous work, job history, portfolio, testimonials, and relevant qualifications/certifications.
[2] The second way is to simply apply the method described in page 22-25 of my How To Get Freelance Clients guide.
With this method, there’s not much need to send previous work samples, testimonials, or portfolio.
In fact, if you apply method #2 it is the clients who will want to qualify themselves to be able to work with you.
It allows you to sort the many options and quickly get to the clients who actually fit your style, want to work with you, and willing to pay you.
As you can see, there are only two main ways to get a freelance client. You just have to choose the one that fits you.
